The final chorus, Hymne De L'Amour, from Christoph Willibald Gluck's 1779 opera Echo Et Narcisse. A drame lyrique, it was the composer's last original opera and a complete failure in Paris (for reasons not quite clear to me, considering the music's greatness) after which Gluck decided to return to Vienna. In this production the Hamburg Opera Chorus and Concerto Köln are conduced by René Jacobs. The main roles are played by Sophie Boulin (Echo), Kurt Streit (Narcisse), Deborah Massell (Amour) and Peter Galliard (Cynire). Sung in French. Video with Spanish subtitles. This coproduction of Schwetzinger Festspiele and Hamburgische Staatsoper at the Schwetzingen Festival in 1987 was one of of Jacobs' first attempts as a conductor and the begining of a very sucessful career.

  • The sing was wonderful but I didn't like the set design.

  • The set design? What set desing? Oh, you mean the pile of rubbish behind the singers? :)))

  • I was being polite!

  • Yeah, I know, but I on the other hand tend to be rather brutal on the subject. ;) Luckily, one can always close the eyes and listen to the extremely beautiful music, ignoring the odd ideas of some people on what might look good on a stage. :)

  • Well they could have done a little better job with the design. It was so bare and cold. And I didn't like the final curtain, or backdrop, and have them sing by avoiding it and squatting on the ground. That was kind of juvenile.

    Don't get me started! :-)

  • Exactly. Either do an authentic thing like that Lully's Atys from 1987, or if you wanna do something original, be sure you have a good idea, like in that video of Cesare with Jeffrey Gall. Or just do a concert version. :)

  • I don't know this work very well. Nice. And no comment on the awful set design. Oops. I guess I did comment after all! LOL!
