Patricia Metz, Deputy Director of the State Departments office of Nuclear Energy Safety and Security, brings her experience in nuclear reactor safety and radiological source security to the panel. She talks about how the emergence of interest in civilian nuclear energy has refocused our agendas both domestically and globally to meet the challenge of providing funding and guidance for technical cooperation projects that target regional or country-specific reactor safety concerns and work to ensure the security of radioactive sources. The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies and the Georgetown Institute for International Law and Politics sponsored a panel discussion on setting the legal stage for the expansion of nuclear energy programs in the Middle East at the Henry L. Stimson Center in Washington, DC, on March 4, 2009.
