Not how it sounds, its about meaning... either your words MEAN something, or you are a blabbering idiot.

People who rant about the miss usage of the word literally... well they are ignorant themselves in a certain respect. Literally is a contronym, also referred to as janus words. Like sanction, which can mean to prohibit or to allow, and weather, which can mean to endure or to erode, literally has one definition that is the opposite of another of its definitions. When someone says my head literally exploded, they are using the term correctly, technically.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but unfortunately (or rather, fortunately for most) language evolves. 'Literally' now means 'exactly' or 'for emphasis' according to Oxford and is synonymous with figuratively... which is unfortunate, because that effectively eliminates the word figuratively from everyday speech.

Go figure that literally can now be considered antonymous to itself, like clip, bolt or custom.
