It's not just because most Australians have British or Irish ancestors like me, it's because you turned a fairly desolate island into one of the most modern and magnificent nations on earth and yet you're not arrogant, unlike some. I'm currently living in Boise, Idaho in the U.S. (born and raised) and attending college, but I've already made plans to study abroad in Canberra in less than two years. I'm definitely looking forward to it and hope that I can move to Australia one day! It's such a beautiful place, and I hear the culture and people are amazing.

I'm English too and I agree with the comments here. I just wanted to add this extra thing - did you know that Australia comes 3rd in the World Economic Freedom Index ?

(And that's seven places ahead of the USA)

It's a beautiful place, though this is a biased opinion given I'm Australian, but I don't think you'll regret going if you did, each state has its own image, Queensland is warm and tropical, New South Wales has so much history and Darling Harbour is amazing at night, Victoria (what I've seen of it) is very focused on art, it's quite stunning, why would you be afraid? :)
