no it is not a stupid question, your chance seems a bit low,but scientist is always scientist,I am sure you can be interesting for them,exceptional maybe ı can call, that provides you to be accepted...so don't worry, this year's applications is over but you should apply next year.

There are up to 150 countries participating in various forms so you don't need to be one of the core 20 member states to get involved.

Theres some aspects of radiography and radiation based medicines that were inspired by CERNs work but I don't think there is direct medical research associated with CERN. That being said i may be wrong

That's a good point, but i would guess that they make the protons and anti-protons by pair production (as anti-protons do not exist naturally on earth) I'd also guess that it would be extremely difficult to take only the protons out of an atom. Unless it emits Alpha particles and you somehow split them up to get neutrons and protons, but if you did that then you'd be left with a load of neutrons which you cant do anything with. I'll look into it though.
