The Big Crime- September 9, 1954-
This excellent episode is a prime example of why this was such a great show. Jack Webb didnt shy away from what he felt were important issues, and the subject of this episode was pretty powerful stuff in 1954. Some might call the ending a bit melodramatic, but that closing scene stuck with me for a little while.

  • man,he left nothing out,good show.made it interesting

  • @onemooners yep. This is one of the better ones. The closing shot is the best.

  • I had a hard time watching this one because I previously heard it on XM's Radio Classics.

Dragnet was and still is a spellbinding show.

  • There wasn't a great deal of violence in the show because Webb always focused on the more routine methods of dectective work. Knocking on doors and talking to people. So you could listen to the soundtrack from the TV show and still know what was going on. Not much difference than the radio version

  • It amazes me they did an episode on this back in the 50's, of all times.

  • Bar none, best TV show there ever was.

  • @mytvmemories I was surprised to see Jack Webb playing the role of a young party host.

  • @Nikolaii2571 I've watched "Sunset Boulevard" several times, and I never knew Jack Webb appeared in the movie. Do you know what part, or what the scene was about where he did the cameo? That's extremely interesting to me, and I'd like to try and find it.

  • @gigantor21 Jack Webb was also a narrator for one the Cold War's movies called: "The Red Nightmare". He made a cameo appearance at a film noir called "The Sunset Boulevard" with William Holden and Gloria Swanson. Webb went on to produce Dragnet-1967; ADAM-12; and another TV serial which dealt with two military personel who teamed up as partners who investigated UFO reports in the late 1970s (I forget the name of that show at this moment).

  • @zvi303 The show did go out of its way to point out many of our society's ills in the 1950s, yes. I also remember that these were the topics that yesterday's polite society liked to stick its head in the sand and pretend that those problems didn't exist. J. Edgar Hoover claimed that the MAFIA didn't exist either back then. Also, there were stricter laws regarding censorship which did not permit the producers to come out with the shows which we can view today.

The changes came slowly for Webb

  • Detroit,Michigan was one of our biggest cities in 1954 and one of our proud jewels too. Look at it now.

  • Damn I knoooow people don't know shit about dragnet by the amount of comments. All you people above and below are awesome and know your shit.!!! Rock on bitches!!

  • All Dragnet was anti drugs. It sure did'nt work, but fun to watch.

  • @gigantor21 definitely a wild subject for television in the fifties.especially with the note of the child's dress found in the hedges.
