Addressing a popular question he often gets from his readers and viewers, http://LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blogger Jimmy Moore and his wife Christine talk about Ketostix and what purpose they can serve on a low-carb diet as part of their "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube" series.
Ketostix are a great tool for measuring the amount of ketones your body is producing. But, as Jimmy explains in this video, there is no such thing as "light" or "heavy" ketosis as is often misunderstood. If you show any color change, then you are in ketosis. And even if you show NO ketones, you could still be in ketosis and using up all of your ketone bodies.
"Is Ketosis Necessary On A Low-Carb Diet?" blog post:
The bottom line is to NOT get discouraged by these sticks. Consume less than 50g carbohydrates daily and you WILL be in ketosis and well on your way to burning stored fat. WOO HOO!
Also in this video, Jimmy and Christine talk about their upcoming trip to Nashville, Tennessee to participate in former "Biggest Loser" contestant Isabeau Miller from Season 4 and her FitCamp. This two-week camp will feature an intensive 6-hour-a-day exercise routine just like on "The Biggest Loser" with training from Isabeau and other former BL contestants. Jimmy will be posting daily videos of this experience in a special "FitCamp" section on his YouTube page at http://www.YouTube.com/livinlowcarbman starting August 17, 2008. Check it out!

Hi, first of all, love the vid very informative, after all the google searches this is the easiest to understand & love the name livin la vida low carb..lol,i need to lose bodyfat while maintaining muscle mass being in ketosis will burn fat right but i have been told this depletes glycogen (which will flatten my muscle..is this true) do you think it would be best to lower carbs as much as possible without entering ketosis so i can still maintain muscle or being in ketosis, thanks for the help
Ketosis is perfectly harmless and a natural part of a healthy low-carb, high-fat diet. You can burn body fat while building muscle mass eating a ketogenic diet. Read THE TNT DIET by Dr. Jeff Volek and Adam Campbell for more info on this. In the absence of carbohydrate in the diet, your body replenishes glycogen stores through a process called gluconeogenesis where glucose is produced through the liver from the protein you eat. I did a video on this subject, too, so check it out! WELCOME!
the only way i have registered in the dark purple is when i take the test after i eat other then that its always a step down from that in the mornings... thanks for the video.. i was starting to stress about it too after reading tons of stuff in forums lol
whoa i just realized its been a full week today on induction lol yay
You would think that, but it's just not true. Ketone bodies are either present or not. There isn't "greater" fat-burning from MORE ketone bodies. I appreciate the response, though. :)
