This was an Arizona Grocery store that before Walmart Supercenters had a grocery store, merchandise, resturaunt and were large stores. This was with Hal & Joni. This store is nolonger. This commercial is from the late 80's
@tkmaz yeah, it's the sign of the times...conspiracy theories, notwithstanding. sam walton was watching what clyde smith was doing, you better believe it. once the patriarch of walmart died, the global cartel pressured walmart into unspeakable things...like treason. sam is probably doing revolutions in his grave
@ultrakool There were small departments for toys or clothing - somewhat like Fry's Marketplace is now but Walmart is sort of the scourge of the nation these days & Smitty's always had a down home feel...something Walmart lost once ol' Walton passed on. We knew the barber inside Smitty's, the butcher, I once lost $5 on my way and the manager let me fill an I.O.U as a 10 year old child...I can't see Walmart doing that. Or really, ANY store. But it was a different time.
@tkmaz according to clyde smith's book, smitty's was indeed the first superstore of it's kind. it opened in scottsdale in '62, attracting grocers from around the u.s. to take a look at it
@biglove1973 hey, that was the one we shopped at. i still live in the area. i was going to run a small article on smitty's in my magazine, in the future. one of my friends built the original parking lot for that store.
the one a tatum and shea was huge, that was my first real job at 15 bagging groceries back in 95.
Also yes it was like a predesessor to the walmart superstores. You could buy a shirt, develope pics, get a bike and a gallon of milk all at the same place
Smitty's was not the the "Walmart predecessor" it's now Fry's Marketplace...minus the restaurant. We lived near the one on 35th & Bethany, I think I was a teen when it went out of business. :(
