"Skylab show out of this world" - Victoria Young, Esperance Express.
WALKING into the 'Skylab, Out of Orbit' exhibition at the
Cannery Arts Centre is a sensory and exciting experience.
You are taken into a dimly lit world with images and
sounds that take you to galaxies far, far away.
The exhibition is the creation of David Carson, curator and artist, Brian McClave, experimental video artist working in stereoscopic digital imaging, and George Millward, a US based sound artist and atmospheric physicist. With that line-up, it is no wonder the exhibit challenges visually but also technologically, incorporating state-of-the art materials and equipment to project 3D images. Esperance is the start of a national tour and Mr Carson is working towards touring internationally.
The idea for the exhibition was developed in the late 90s
while Mr Carson was in Esperance and discovered the link with Skylab when parts of the space station fell on the region in July 1979.
The idea developed to focus on two things that crashed to Earth, Skylab, and the massive meteorite that left a huge scare in the landscape the Wolf Creek Crater - near Balgo Hills in WA's northwest eons ago.
The crater is almost 900 metres in diameter and 150m
deep. A circular theme, representing an orbit, runs through the artworks which include a 10-minute video in 3D with images of newspaper articles, television footage, pieces of Skylab and an image of the Skylab model intermingling with all images.
He said he would like to see the video footage created for the exhibition included in the Esperance Museum's Skylab display and would be interested in helping the museum committee to achieve that.
Mr Carson thanked Merv and Dot Andre from the museum for their assistance and allowing him to use pieces in the exhibition from the collection.
The exhibition is a chance to see history represented by
ground-breaking technology making history.
Skylab toured throughout Australia from 2003 - 2007
