So, I installed an Apple ATI Radeon 5770 in my Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) and when i press the power button, it just clicks, then a few seconds later, again. I unplug it a few times, let it sit for a bit, try it later, and it works again. This is definitely a power supply issue? I have re-seated the videocard and tried a different slot and it still does it. So i've just been keeping it turned on for days, out of fear of it not turning back on! Thanks

If the issue wasn't there prior to the video card, I would swap in the old video card to see if it resolves the issue. If it doesn't you may be looking at a logic board issue. If could be the power supply, but that won't go out just by installing a video card, and it's more likely that somehow the logic board was damaged.

To replace the PSU, you need to remove the two rear drive carriers, the four screws shown in this video, the optic drive carrier at top front, then the cover plate UNDER the optic drive carrier (2 screws). Then you need to loosen the velcro holding the cables in place, in order for the PSU to be able to slide forward slightly, so that you can THEN remove it as shown in this video. It's still a tough pull because of the stiff cables, you have to feed them through the slot.

Perhaps it is a different model, but apparently there is a plate behind the super drive that must be removed to unhook the power supply. Took that off, undid the velcro, no problem.

Thanks for the great video! I had an issue with the T10's stripping and had to use a dremel to cut a groove for a flat head. After that, I thought I was in the clear, but now the power supply unit won't come out. I think there are wires getting caught or something because there is some give when I pull, but not enough. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

Could I have damaged by logic board or power supply by putting in Nvidia 8800gt video card without a 6 pin PCIe booster cable? My computer won't start up and all I see is a red light. When I press the button next to it, the "trickle" light turns on.

I have a cricket/grass hopper sound coming from the power supply area listening from the back, any idea what the problem is? Thanks

WAY better design than on my G5 Quad (late 2005). Apple decided to put the PSU right at the bottom of the tower. So if you have your Mac on carpet, over time the PSU will get clogged - this happened to me. You have to remove the entire contents of the Mac just to get to the PSU. So yes, I'm glad Apple made it easier to remove the PSU from the MacPro. I've since got a MacPro so air dusting etc should be easier. Good video, thanks!

Great video!! I'm actually building a Mac Pro from scratch and your video showed me something that I didn't know! When you took out the optical carrier right behind it was a fan for the power supply, I thought that there were only 3 fans in the pro (PCIe and the fans for the processor cage). There was no mention of this fan in any of the schematics or tear downs that I have seen to date. Thanks for the video I almost made a big mistake in not including this part!!!!!
