OCCUPATION and LOCKDOWN of Tucson Border Patrol HQ. 5/21/10

Tucson, AZ At approximately 1:00 PM Friday, May 21, 2010 more than a dozen people occupied the Tucson Headquarters of the US Border Patrol to draw attention to impacts of border militarization in Indigenous Communities. Six people, including Alex Soto a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation and a volunteer with the group Oodham Solidarity Across Borders, locked themselves together for up to 3 and 1/2 hours. Indigenous voices have been ignored. In our action today we say NO MORE! Said Soto.

@lubetubeful I think most of us know that Europeans are here to stay. Native Americans make up 1% of the population - and only 1% of that 1% is full blooded... That's why the tribes and Latinos need to stand together. A myriad of things in this country need to be changed, but kicking ANY group out of the country is impracticable. Segregation only promotes ignorance and hate. If everyone worked on BEing HUMBLE, SHOWing RESPECT & LISTENing we could advance leaps & bounds.

@lubetubeful - I agree; however let me say this. My friend always says that very same thing, how she's going to Europe because this country is so fucked. But how will it get any better if everyone who acknowledges how fucked up it is runs to another country? This is my land - I will fight for it... call it Yaqui stubbornness, but I can't leave. My question to her and you is this: Do you stand and fight for what you believe in or do you desert your loved ones to face their fate alone?

@DEDA96 - Nobody is pure anything these days - anyone who thinks they are is pretty full of it. Think of it this way: If your dad's side of the family wants to kick your mom's side of the family out into the street to starve - your going to protest on behalf of the side of your family that's going to be hurt right? Same thing applies here. They are both. You should never have to pick just one side of your family to defend. You defend both sides when necessary.

I've been to many protests and I gotta say - I feel like I'm wasting my time. Peaceful protest only worked during the civil rights movement because people were afraid violence would break out any moment. Martin Luther King Jr. would have been ineffective if Malcolm X had not been standing on the other side of the room. Privileged people will not relinquish their power unless they feel there will be real consequences if they don't. We need more lawyers & lawsuits in the game.
