Do you have water stored for an emergency? I didn't. Not until I passed rain water through a Sawyer Water Filter and filled three 15 gallon plastic containers. The barrels are food grade and were used to transport artificial flavours. Their size makes them portable as well.

I was careful not to contaminate the storage vessel with "dirty" rain water.

  • I'm using 55 gal "blue barrels" that once held vegetable oil, cleaned them out with hot water and liquid soap, rinsed well, refilled with water and bleach, let sit 24 hours, drained and refilled with water only, let sit, drained and flushed, filled with filtered water and a 1/4 cup bleach.

Barrels are sitting on 2x4's to keep them off the concrete floor.

  • Question:

Why buy AQUAMIRA at $14.00 for 30 gal of treatment when I can use 1/4 cup bleach per 55 gal which has the same active ingredient "chlorine"?

  • Any container you use that once had petroleum based hydrocarbon liquids in them you can never remove the chemicals that have been absorbed in the plastic.Always use certified cleaned potable water or food grade containers that have never had detergents, petroleum products or chemicals. That Flammable liquid Placard is a warning sign.

  • You sale those barrels I am having problems locating them in Central FL

I ended up with 3 gal containers five per family member for water

and five gal food grade kitchen /Bakery buckets with lids for Food

There are many companies having one bucket full of one thing

That is good for some but I pack mine seven days worth of food

21 meals for one person in one bucket I have been doing this since before 1992 Hurricane Andrew

  • @MrMatthew1180 Read the Card that it came on you will see that you need about three cards

But It is nice to have one 55 gal.drum but once it is fill you will not move it It is a lot of trouble for

one person to handle have three or five 15 gal container To move with a small group of people two families Finding a strong ware-House for a Bug out retreat to store a three to four Families gear in the urban area would be join together to purchase Now

  • how many tablets do you need for 55 gallons ? Please get back with me - matt

  • great video. the videos stimulate conversation on the topic with others sharing their views. thus your video achieves it's purpose of informing us directly via your own personal shared knowledge. As well as the opinions and advice of others stimulated from watching.

  • You have the best videos on youtube!

  • Running thru filter great idea for free water. In all honesty, you wasted your money using those Aqua tabs. You could have used 5.25% household bleach to sanitize the barrels after rinsing them out. about one tablespoon (1/2 fluid ounce, 15 ml) of typical chlorine bleach per gallon of water is the maximum that should be used for sanitizing food contact surfaces.Contact times of one to five minutes are usually sufficient to achieve a thorough kill, depending on chlorine concentration.

  • you can never have to much water!!!!!!!!!

  • wow flammable sticker don't know about that

  • redo the tags on the containers ... that flammable sign is scary...

  • Good video, great idea!

  • Stop with all the Survival information my brain is FULL !

Just kidding - Great H2O collection / storage setup there !

  • Also keep in mind, that city water is so cheap that is it almost free. It's a great idea to store water. What source the water comes from is entirely up to you.

  • Great job on the water storage. I would argue the point on that amount of water being transportable. In a vehicle, yes. Any other means not likely. Remember that water weights 1kg/L. So it adds up quick.

  • Good info and system dude. Thanks for sharing.

  • Water is crucial! Great job there Chad!

  • Rinse your barrels with coffee filtered rain water use bleach then after turn barrel over to drip dry and leave them in the sun that would more than solve any issue you might have the barrels will reach temps greater than 160 which is the temp to paserize. Drops of bleach in water will kill many wolly bugers not all but many the sun will do the rest.

  • smart!
