A guy I know on a construction course once told me they do it because a) it's hilarious b) the reaction is hilarious and c) It'll totally give the girl an ego boost. He's the very reason why commuters never talk to each other; they could turn out to be racist, chauvinist, homophobic douche-bags and then you're trapped talking to them every time you take that bus...
