Wordpress Template Spam

I recently uncovered some amateur spam in a free template my friend downloaded for her web site. This kind of thing could cause you a lot of trouble in the search engines

With a bit of digging, you can pull that content out of the footer. They just don't make it easy. It's in a buried file.

I think having the authors name and link at the bottom is totally cool. But embedding the links through encrypted code and pointing to more than one link goes above and beyond.

Yes Sage you pointed out here something that can definitely alter a page rank !

I recently downloaded a free template too and it also has some kinda weird links at the bottom. The thing is that I like the template and would like to remove this link while keeping the author name but the whole footer is encrypted. Damn ! I don't know what to do. Can anyone help ?

I use free WordPress Themes and plugins all the time. Is having the authors name and his link in the footer okay, or should those be removed also?

Common on people, a footer link is one thing. But spammy "hidden" links in your wordpress theme?

Funny, I am launching my own seo optimized wordpress theme. Yea I got a link in the footer, but it is one link and their is not "trickery" ...
