In their country music videos, The Jeff Warren Johnston Band performs their classic-sounding, country songs at popular music venues in Austin, Texas. The mission of the JWJ Band is to please listeners longing for that "real" country music sound in the vein of traditional artists such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Johnny Cash, while simultaneously paving new country roads. This particular song is inspired by a breakup, and was the catalyst for 95% of JWJ's latest output. It's meant to be in the spirit of popular sad country songs, country ballads, and southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers. Bob Dylan's Knockin on Heaven's Door also played a part in it.

The JWJ Band highly recommends: The Marshall Ford Swing Band, the Atomic Duo, the Love Leighs, Roky Erickson, 13th Floor Elevators, Jack Wilson, Raina Rose, Terri Hendrix, Corrina's Dreamland Band, Guy Forsyth, Milk Drive, Sick's Pack, The Belleville Outfit, Junior Brown, Dale Watson, Robert Earl Keen, and the Bad Livers

LYRICS:The well's run dry I suppose
I'm searchin' in vain for a change of clothes
You slapped my face, and changed my taste
But we all know how that story goes

I wonder if I'll ever learn
Maybe I'll just crash and burn
You're a hopeless case, with an angel face
I can't walk away and my back won't turn

'Cause I love you to pieces
I don't care what people say
You can take me, you can leave me
I'll still love you either way
You could break my heart a thousand times
You can stay or run away
I'll still love you to pieces either way

I bought my ticket out of town
Ain't no sense in me hangin' round
We had a good run, and it sure was fun
A fair price to pay for the damage done

I can't say how this love unfolds
Further on down that road
One things for sure, my love is pure
I'd do it all again despite what I know

Cause I love you to pieces
I don't care what people say
You can take me, you can leave me
I'll still love you either way
You could break my heart a thousand times
And might never change your ways
I'll still love you to pieces either way

(C) 2009 Jeff Warren Johnston

  • beautiful beautiful song.

  • You've got "it" man. Now run with it, and don't stop.

  • That's an amazing song, Jeff, heart-wrenching as it may be. Can't wait to hear what else pours out of your heart, way to go :)

  • Jeff,

Great song! Your facility with melody and expressiveness of your lyrics make me want to hear more. Yeah, this could be a country song, but any good singer would love to have a shot at this one. Don't ever stop writing, you have the gift.

    Best wishes,

    Bruce

  • Your raw feelings are so evident, here. Great songwriting. I can hear a whole band behind this tune. It sounds like a song that somebody wrote a while ago.
