@rhoscrazy try CTRL+ALT+T or ALT+F2 then type gnome-terminal or in case of KDE try typing in "konsole". If this doesnt work for you eaither - press CTRL+ALT+F1.

@rhoscrazy To find the command line from a graphical desktop, the best way, as a newbie, is to open a 'terminal'. (On my Ubuntu system, this is a programme which I can find by opening the Applications menu, choosing Accessories, then choosing Terminal. Finding it might be slightly different on yours, but it will very likely be called 'Terminal' when you do. :-D)
