My Theory: It was an AT-3 or some western ATGM the iraqis had. RPGs range is way too short for this situation. A Hind would cause another reaction-dispersion, panic or returning fire. As it would be with Tankfire. Tank and Artillery fire wouldnt be a single shell, there would have some followed. The explosion looks like a bigger Heat charge setting some fuel up. The sound of the incoming charge could be either ATGM or Tankshell. Its an ATGM.

@azas1 You are correct, you can hear the incomming round. amd there is no evidence of a missile or RPG.

i think the explotion is from box at the top of the engine, overheating and boom!!!

1,The hit is on top, around the gearbox area of the vehicle, it may have gone thru one of the fuel panniers which explains the large amounts of smoke & flame.2,A can of fuel or oil explodes in the turret basket.3,The crew compartment would not have been penetrated but 2 crewmen jump off the vehicle as the tank is now a rather bright target & all the ammos inside! 4,The cmdr seems to have told the driver to drive on, out of range of whoever fired at them. Interesting it's still drivable, init?

@ppitm Yes, RPG's and ATGM's used HEAT warheads, but the RPG warhead is the smallest because of the limitations of a shoulder fired rocket. Further, what explosive there is is focused into a very narrow jet
The explosion that took out the Chieftan was to large to be an RPG, and yes, I've seen RPG's.

@Waltham1892 Both RPGs and ATGMs fire HEAT rounds. The explosion was quite reasonable for an RPG. What little of it was saw seemed to be flames from the tank and kicked-up desert dust, so not really from the warhead at all.

@TankNutDave A KE round would have made much less mess.

@TankNutDave Just before the tank got hit you can hear the sound of the missile. Its was defiantly travelling at a high velocity, way to high and powerful for an RPG7. If it was an RPG at the least it would be an RPG 29. Most likely a Sagger.
from one tank nut to another, thanks

What do you believe it was hit by atgm or just shell from a Iraqi tank ???

not guided missile, more like a lucky RPG7 hit. However the troops in the trench in front were not behaving like they were under fire. There is a woosh noise, but a tank round would have made more of a mess.

no that was a ATGM fired form a distance, Iranians were walking around like it was a parade, thus the enemy position had to be further. RPG engine burns out after 1-2 seconds, and then it flys inertially, more quietly than it sounds ona vid. and then it has a self-destruct timer activating at 750-800 meters. ATGM no doubt, maybe fired form Mi24 Hind, witch Iraq had plenty of. plus it hit on TOP of engine compartment, and not on a side - witch stregthens the air-launched theory.

I think its more likely to be a ground to ground ATM rather than air launched, they would have spotted a Hind hovering in the distance and had zsu 23, plus the terrain would have easily worked in an antitank team advantage :-)
