  • Okay Esper, creativity question here, what would you say to having players do the Thriller dance on a magic circle in order to be transported to the nine hells?

  • @smithtommi That sounds hilarious. So what would they dance to get to other planes?

  • Have you actually played Dungeons & Dragons as an RPG or just an over-complicated boardgame?

  • @Dawnlight1 Have you ever watched the adventures I run here on YouTube? I'm assuming no.

  • @repsesper I have. And I was not impressed. But thats a matter of personnal taste really so it's not important. Maybe I'm wrong, but you are trying to pass your opinion as fact regarding the various editions of the game. It's good that the game system is moving forward, but no... 4th edition is far from a good system. I agree though with you on one thing, as a DM myself: 3rd edition and onwards, it made world building far better and gave us more options.

  • @Dawnlight1 How exactly are my adventures not roleplaying experiences? Island of Horns? A Dagger for Fate? Eldritch Castle?

  • I disagree that the art is better in 4.0 than it's ever been in D&D. In AD&D (2E especially) the art work is high quality oil paintings. They define fantasy art and were inspired by famous Tolkien artists. The new art IS an improvement over 3.0, yet I feel like 4.0 art is based not on Tolkien fantasy art but rather more on World of Warcraft. I find it uninspiring. The focus seems to be on making every character 'heroic' & 'iconic.' When everyone is so 'special' - no one is. It breaks immersion.

  • @FazopTheWizard I respect that opinion. As an artist and a critic, I do love what I call "traditional fantasy", which draws from world mythology and ancient cultures. 4e art is indeed more pulp, more stylized, and it does fall into the semi-shallow attitude of "everything and everyone is badass." It's kind of like comparing an action movie to an atmospheric movie. However, I often find 4e art can be more evocative due to its stylizing. All that said, I love both styles for what they are.

  • Be my DM! =)

No really, great review and good points!

  • I fell in love with the Storm Soul Sorcerer just by looking at the pic and thinking... wouldn't it be awsome being a flying drow that shoots lightning and thunder at my opponents as the currents gush around her (and give a feel off as being Storm from X-men - her powers being one of the most destructive and awesome ones of the Marvel stories).

  • @FazopTheWizard I like the 1st Edition book covers myself.

  • i can guess from your statements that you never played any whitewolf game or anything similar either. i mean i can't guess how you would rave on about the world of darkness system, which is one of the most loved in the rpg community. just go play warhammer maybe if you think tabletop rpgs are tactical wargames and leave commenting on d&d editions on real roleplayers.

  • understand this: this isn't a wargame. it never was. mayhaps you dont get it because you never played 2nd edition, where figurines etc were just luxury, balance was non-existent, but it didnt cause any problems because the players are not fighting against eachother. people expected to be gandalf when they played a wiz and boromir when they played a fighter. it was fine.

  • Sir, you have no idea what pen & paper roleplaying games are about on so many levels, it's impossible to show you the mistakes you do in your review. mainly what you don't get is: rpgs and also d&d is about roleplaying a story. it's about living a phantasy novel, it's about being bilbo against 3 trolls.. danger, vulnerability is all a part of this feeling. d&d is not a traditional game, it doesn't have to be "fair" since it isnt about winning or losing. it is all about a good story.

  • @wilfre2097 I use blank white paper and a 1 inch wide ruler and make my own. Takes a while and many a night, but gets the job done and I get control over the tv while doing so. I have never found any in any office supply shop where I live, so I just bit the bullet and made do.

  • @repsesper Haters gonna hate. Keep making the videos man, I LOVE your adventures.

  • @wilfre2097 gamingpaper (website of same name) might be what you are looking for; but the usual method is to design the map on normal graph paper 1/4 inch and then transfer it onto one of numerous purpose made 1 inch gaming surfaces that are reusable chexex matts, paizo tiles eta.
