@benandtinagilbert Most of the diving you see on youtube is in ideal conditions. A great part of diving you cant see a thing due to the mud, especially in the gulf of mexico. Imagine scuba diving with duct tape on your mask. Alot of guys come on because of the "glory" of the job. And most leave when they realize there isn't any. The average career span is 5 years. Several of those years you won't even be diving but working as a tender for much less money. Statistically speaking, you will quit.

@benandtinagilbert I went to Ocean Corp. Don't waste time and money with recreational certs as it means nothing in the commercial biz. The Ocean Corp wasnt a bad school. Expensive though. I would try to start in the spring time. As far as the biz goes you must realize that to make decent money you will have to spend at least 8 months out of the year sitting on a boat working 12+ hours a day. On land in the shop you will only make minimum wages. My opinion, if you are a family man reconsider.

Not a lot of beans to spill really, we anylise the hell out of projects/operations before starting them and try to weed out the hazards. Accidents do happen though - they always will.

One of the most common 'Badges of Honour' is a missing finger or part of one. Diver's have a tendency to poke their fingers into pipe flange holes and faces when they KNOW there is a possibility the pipes may move - quickly. If something is stuck in a gap poke it out with your knife, welding rod... anything but your fingers!
