Professional athletes are known to have a high risk for joint or ligament injuries due to their chosen career. But, it seems that our pets, especially dogs, are at high risk as well. From broken legs to birth defects, veterinary orthopedic medicine is big business.
Martin Kaufmann created Ortho Pets (www.orthopets.com), a company devoting their expertise to helping pets recover from orthopedic surgery, traumatic injury, or congenital deformities.
my dog was recently diagnosed for patellar luaxtion. shes 18 yrs old & due to her age vets prefer her not to have surgery for it.
My question is.
can she wear a brace then without having surgery and still benefit her walking? or is surgery a must?

Vets tend to promote surgery for Cruciate tears. May be necessary sometimes, but I have spoken to people who have healed their dogs with a good brace and/or lots of REST.
There is a Yahoo Group called Conservative Management, for dogs with ligament tears. Many are doing 4 months of complete rest, Natural cartilage supporting supplements, and some are using braces.
This will work for some dogs, but sometimes people are opting for surgery. This group also discusses diff surgical procedures.
