Edit: If you're interested in buying an SSD based on just having quicker boot up times then I recommend you don't. A clean OS on a HDD or a RAID 0 set-up could probably boot in pretty similar times. You should want to buy an SSD because it will let you have way more programs on start up with minimal performance impact, because it will make your overall user experience much more snappy and finally because it will remove the bottle neck on your expensive RAM and CPU and allow them to perform at the speed you were expecting when you bought your fancy new computer. :)

In this video I compare the loading speed of the new OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD to the speed of a Western Digital Caviar Black 1000GB HDD with impressive results ( for the SSD at least).

The programs set to open on both tests are the same design programs from AutoDesk and Adobe. All very demanding programs. Enjoy the Video :).

System Specs at time of recording :

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cross-FireX with HD 5750

OS & Program Storage SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 120GB

Storage HDD:Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1000GB [ 7200 RPM ]

  • That ssd is fast but Ive seen ocz vertex 3 agilty more faster then yours.

    Hows that?

  • @oscar7610 Depends on the OS, the CPU, the motherboard the RAM, the programs being opened and permission settings etc etc..

  • Trying to explain to a friend that an SSD is about "speed", not "size". He's all like "I can get 4TB of space for the price of 1 SSD, what a rip-off". I'm like "Dude, you don't NEED 4TB, but you NEED the speed!". Argh! /sigh

  • @3Z3K13L08 Haha I know the feeling. I'm always preaching about SSD's, never had something change the performance as drastically as an SSD.

Tell him to get a 500GB HDD and a cheaper SSD,job done. =P. Although in all honesty I couldn't live without my 5TB I think if I had to choose between the two I'd be tempted to say the 5TB.

SLI 580's? Damn I feel spoilt having just one 580 haha! Nice rig dude.Nvidia just released the new 295.73 drivers if you didn't already know. Big improvements.

  • @unb0xed Tempted to add a 3rd 580, I actually have enough saved for 2 more xD. Might grab some studio monitors instead, my sound is the worst thing about my rig atm (running cheap $100 Creative's atm). I'll grab those drivers, thanks for the heads up! I just installed my new Intel 520 240GB yesterday, it beats my old Vertex 2 raid0 setup for sure.

  • @3Z3K13L08 Yeah I'd wait before you get another GPU I'm hearing rumours of some big changes from Nvidia and AMD this year. You know what my sound was one thing I left till last to upgrade, just got a new sound card for it last week, can't believe the difference it made, wasn't even all that expensive a sound card..might be worth looking at one of those to go with the studio monitors, if you don't already have one.

  • That was awesome! So quick. I got the Vertex 60gb cant wait to try it out now :)

  • @paszag The results will be the same with or with out the bios included it makes no difference, especially as this is not a boot up time test, its a stress test.

  • holy...

  • i know what my next upgrade is going to be :)

  • @CillitBang12388 That probably is because of the hard drive spinning up at the beginning, so that could also be given to the SSDs speed
