Thumb Arthroplasty (Arthritis Surgery Base of Thumb CMC Joint)

My doc told me there was going to be some sort of a rod sticking out of my thumb for about 6-8 weeks in a hard cast and then it is removed and the rod is removed and a soft cast is put on for 4-6 weeks more.

I wonder if this is a new procedure or am I looking at the wrong surgery scaring the crap out of myself.

I had this surgery done January 31 on my left hand. I've had a splint, but will be getting a cast this week. There was some swelling at first, but that is almost all gone now. Not much pain at all - in fact, my right hand hurts more than the hand I had the surgery on. One thing that has been great for me is the Curad cast protector. Covers the splint completely and is easy to put on. I can shower with no worries of getting the splint wet. I will get my right hand done after this hand heals.
