This is a demonstration of Immersive 3D Simulator technology prepared for GIS Day 2008. Three levels of detail are represented.
Level 1 is a 1:42-scale bare earth terrain model with an orthoimage "satellite" photo draped over it, just like Google Earth.
Level 2 is a reflective LiDAR (airborne laser scanner) surface 1:16-scale build with the same orthoimage. Since the surface is much more complex and represents all large buildings and trees, the orthophoto looks a bit surrealistic. For Level 2 this is a bug, not a feature.
Level 3 is a classic Second Life type Immersive 3D build, but made at painstaking 1:3-scale with real world textures. Many of the textures did not rez completely while this machinina was shot. Hey, if you want to see more, log yourself into Second Life Gualala and set the graphics quality to "Ultra"
The Level 2 build has been stood up in OpenSim at 1:1.024-scale glory over 40 regions. The server is public at osim.bargc.org and I've posted several machinima that were shot in it. If you are interested in visiting the BARGC server, please send an e-mail to darb AT simgis.com
