Hinterseer war schon 28 Jahre alt, als er in den USA zu seinen größten Erfolgen fuhr. Trainer Othmar Schneider nominierte ihn nach einigem Hin und Her für den Riesentorlauf. Hinterseer dankte es mit Bronze und stand damit auch im Slalom-Team. Als Fünfter nach dem ersten Lauf stürmte er noch vor Hias Leitner und dem Franzosen Charles Bozon zu Gold.

Der ehemalige Bauernbub von der Seidlalm, nach den Winterspielen 1972 in Sapporo als Coach der ÖSV-Techniker tätig, wurde zum Begründer einer ganzen Ski-Dynastie. Seine drei Söhne (Hansi, Ernst und Guido) waren später durchwegs Mitglieder der Nationalmannschaft, während sich der Senior nach Ende der Trainer-Laufbahn eine Existenz im Sport- und Fremdenverkehrswesen aufbaute.

Ho visto il documentario e tra i concorrenti dello slalom speciale c' era ancora un sud-coreano che aveva imparato a sciare sui libri che arrivò al traguardo! Mitico!

I raced back in the late 60's and early 70's well before parabolics came on the scene. You had to have perfect technique to race well. It was very hard to find coaches and instructors to teach you the new, back then, racing techniques.

it's really intriguing how people back then were able to ski so artfully without the benefit if parabolic skis.... awesome!
