Well, there are the T'ai Chi people who study the form and ponder on muscle memorization or learn to sense minute movements, and then there are the kind who for some reason think they can shoot fireballs out of their eyes. I have taken T'ai Chi for a few years now and my balance has improved dramatically as well as my improvisation. Don't be frightened away by the crazies who think that they can one day break a brick wall with a pelvic thrust.

If you see the older ( pre communist ) tai chi, it is much more martial. Also, applying the techniques can only be learned by someone who has mastered FIGHTING WITH TAI CHI. Most people who master it ( which is a really incredible thing to do) don't learn from masters from a fighting tradition. I studied with a sifu with that knowledge and it is different. But that can be said for most martial arts nowadays. You only learn fighting by fighting. Those traditional forms dont protect the head.

@stonethk yes, this is Fujian White Crane boxing. Master Huang was the classmate under Cheng Man-ching of two masters that I learned Tai Chi Chuan from for many years, Masters Abraham Liu and Benjamin Lo. This clip shows true soft power, the result of a lifetime of cultivation: the mastery of two internal arts.

@kagyu1 well u can learn fighting just by practising taijiquan. westerners have almost no profound knowledge of "qi" therefore they threw away such things.
