According to George, this was supposed to have been a Fred Allen short- but he couldn't make it, and he and Gracie were literally summoned at the last minute to the Brooklyn Vitaphone studio to film this. And because this was supposed to be someone's living room, George devised the idea of him and Gracie looking around the room at the start, "searching" for the audience until they see "us". Supposedly, George wore his hat because he hadn't had time to put his toupee on.
