Carving a pumpkin is fun but can also be dangerous.
Here are a few tips to help you carve safely:
1. Find a pumpkin with a smooth surface. Make sure it is free from blemishes and mold.
2. Cover a tabletop with old newspapers or a wipe-clean cloth.
3. Use a permanent black marker to draw a face on the pumpkin. Add a mouth, nose and eyes. Keep the features large enough to cut out easily.
4. Remove the top of the pumpkin by carving around the stem. Use a child-safe serrated knife with ridges on both sides. The child should cut deep enough to reach the hollow area inside of the pumpkin. Slide the top off the pumpkin.
5. Put your hand inside the pumpkin and remove all the stringy flesh and seeds. A spoon will help to separate all the string from the sides of the pumpkin.
6. Carefully carve the eyes, nose and mouth along the black outline with the child-safe serrated knife. Push the features into the pumpkin and remove by hand.
7. Place a tea light candle inside the carved pumpkin. Have an adult light the candle. Place the top back on the pumpkin.
8. Be proud and enjoy your creepy creation. Happy Hallowe'en!
