This male Two-spotted Tree Cricket is singing on a grape plant on a patio. He has chewed a hole in the leaf to make a perfect fit for his opened, raised wings. This species makes these holes, always the same size and shape, to act as a baffle or amplifier for their singing. If you look closely, you will see the wings raise up against the hole as he sings.
Yes, the two songs are very similar. The Narrow-winged, however, sings in shorter bursts (approx 5 seconds long) at regular intervals. The Two-spotted tends to sing longer (i.e. more than 20 seconds).
