"I Never Sang for My Father: Gene Garrison (Gene Hackman), a forty-year-old New York college professor, is forced to put his plans to marry and move away from his aging parents on hold when his mother dies. Never able to please his irascible father, Tom (Melvyn Douglas), he's now forced to contend with him without his mother's gentle intervention. His sister, Alice (Estelle Parsons), tells her brother he must assert himself and break free from their father, but Gene is torn by his sense of obligation. Screenplay by Robert Anderson and based on his play, and directed by Gilbert Cates.

  • There was another classic scene from that movie where Hackman's character tells his father to shut up.

  • One of the most electrifying films ever made, Melvin Douglas deserved his Oscar, so did the rest of the cast. Flawless. Beardyman9, so sorry to hear of your loss. I have always believed that survivors shouldn't speak at funerals, that it's best left to professionals. I hear what you said, it's a great quote, and so true.

  • Gene Hackman & Estelle Parsons.....burning up the screen together, as they did in "Bonnie And Clyde"....!!

  • god, this film is so hard to find! i think it's available on spanish dvd but not in english. such a pity as it's meant to be a breakthrough film for gene hackman.

  • please, post some other scenes from this wonderful film.

  • A truly wonderful film. Seen many years ago but recently revisited after my Dad died a few weeks ago. I have "Strangers" on tape but it would be nice if more were posted on this very touching film. I was too upset to speak at the funeral but I wanted to stand up and say: "Death ends a life, but it does not end a relationship. Which struggles on in the survivors mind to some resolution it may never find."

  • This is an amazing and powerful drama. The song "Strangers" sung by Roy Clark was beautiful and haunting; can't find that one because of a dispute between songwriters.
