ST:TMP started production as the pilot for the new Star Trek television series. After they started filming they realized it was better to produce the pilot as a motion picture. Decker was supposed to be the new captain in the TV series, but was written out when the decision was made to scrap the TV series entirely and stick with the original cast in films only.

@STNeish Not only see it again after 10 years, but see it in magnificent awesomeness that the TV show never had the budget to do. Totally agree, love this scene.

A lot of people criticize this scene for being too long and pointless. To me, it's one of the best moments in the whole film. This is the reunion of Star Trek fans with their beloved USS ENTERPRISE, which they hadn't seen in 10 years. They needed to give us a chance to drink in the atmosphere, to catch our breath at our first glimpse of her. Jerry Goldsmith's score captures the moment absolutely perfectly, and gives me chills every - single - time.
