Photos taken of an autumn afternoon at Van Corlandt Park on the Lakeside by Sedgwick Ave, Bronx, New York, November, 2010. Though skies were overcast and grey, the trees and falling leaves were so colorful and created beautiful landscapes and a magical setting. Some of the joggers along the trails were training for the NYC Marathon....good luck to everyone participating in the marathon today!

Music by Todd Cochran, "Secret Places" Windham Hill Records from the cd entitled, "A Winter's Solstice VI".

Van Cortlandt Park is New York City's fourth largest park and has more than a thousand acres along the ridges and valleys of the northwest Bronx. The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which follows the remnants of the 41--mile--long Croton Aqueduct, runs north--south through the middle of the park. A native hardwood (oak--hickory) forest surrounds the Putnam Trail (a former railroad route that operated in the park into the 1980s) Two tracks of the New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division once ran there (look for the double wide railroad bridge) to Yonkers' Getty Square (1888 until 1943). What is left of the Van Cortlandt Station can be seen just south of the lake.

The John Kieran Trail and Muir Trail features views of the native Oak/Hickory Forest and scenic Van Cortlandt Lake.

  • Paulita, this is a wonderful upload from you. Thanks for

giving us this experience, incl the background info.

Such ideal music you chose, as always. The middle

section of Cochran's "Secret Places" reminded me

of Claude Bolling's earlier Suites, you know?

By the way, I was so impressed to learn that the

2nd woman over the line was a woman from the

USA who was competing for the first time! ~T
