(Meyerbeer: Gli Ugonotti) Teatro alla Scala, June 7, 1962.
"Bianca al par di neve"

English translation by Richard Arsenty.

A note on the subtitles:
I could not find the libretto used in this legendary but heavily edited performance. The traditional Italian libretto for Gli Ugonotti bore no resemblance whatsoever to this performance. Fortunately, I found a modern translation from the French, which they appeared to follow, in "The Meyerbeer Libretti, Volume 6, Grand Opera 2, Les Huguenots," by Richard Arsenty, with an introduction by Robert Ignatius Letellier. Unfortunately, there were a few places I could not hear or understand the singers' words. In those instances I used the translation given, which may not perfectly match what they were singing but still conveys the meaning of what is happening. All mistakes are mine.

From "Complete Stories of the Great Operas," by Milton Cross:
"Les Huguenots, which was spectacularly successful and which established Meyerbeer as the foremost operatic composer of his day, deals with the violent and bloody struggle between the Catholics and Protestants in France during the sixteenth century. It is based on events leading up to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, around which the climax of the opera is built..."

  • Historic Raoul--one for the ages.

  • Yeas indeed , this aria is a tour de force as it was MEYERBERR ROLES.. iST. NEEDED IS A HEROIC TENOR with the declamatory skills of a poet, 2nd finesse and legato.3rd. the proper use of messa di voce.4th a n easy acuti,, full voiced, bur wit the capacity of changing dynamics. The role has been sung by dramatic tenors from the Belcantista schola of the 19th cemtury. Corelli fulfilled those vocal conditions. During the 50's he attacked Poliuto Hercules, Pollione with success.

  • What an explosive and impressive rendition ~ in my humble opinion Mr. Corelli´s had the most exciting and electrifying tenor voice of the Golden past . Thank you for sharing his art with us, who have heard him life, as well as for the younger generation who only know him from his reordings.

  • Bravo Corelli, Heroic and Belcantista..

  • @EdmundStAustell They say that Raoul is one of the hardest roles to sing, but he carried it off with glory.

  • @opensecret51 Thanks, Masha. I love making the introductions. Finding the photos and trying to match the feeling of the music is always my favorite part.
