  • Thank Senator Tom Harkin for this ridiculous regulation.

  • @MrLangness

Congratulations! You should be very proud to be a career college graduate. Don't ever let anyone put your school down. Be proud of your accomplishments and your education!

  • By the way I have a doctorate degree in higher education from a traditional university. If I wanted to I, tomorrow I could teach at any public or private "traditional" university. But I choose not to, because I love my students. And when they walk across that stage during graduation - I still cry - because I know how hard they worked to get there.

So please don't you ever BASH a non-traditional student.

  • I am infuriated at your comment. If you had been an individual who was not affiliated to education, much less an "instructor who has taught in such institutions" I would not be so insulted. I would not be so upset. But what terrifies me is that there are people like you teaching PERIOD! That is truly a very scary thought. You should not be allowed to step foot into a classroom - traditional or non-traditional - school.

  • You are someone who "should" have some type of education - hopefully a minimum of a Master's degree. Instead of looking down at these people, you should be looking up to them. These "career college" students, have more merit than the non-traditional ones. Because they have to overcome challenges that you and I probably never did.

  • What is truly shameful and sad, is that you call yourself an "instructor". I hope that you are not one of the instructors teaching at My Career College.

I will also tell you one thing, everyone deserves a chance in life. You are correct, some of these students wouldn't be able to attend a traditional university. Not because they lack the brains to succeed, but because they have other - family, work, etc. - commitment that wouldn't allow them to attend the "traditional" university.

  • And why are many of the people from these programs non-employable?

    Ever see their tattoos?

  • There would be no nurses without career colleges?? BULLSHIT!!

There would be no cops/security guards without career colleges?? BULLSHIT!!

There would be no cooks without career colleges?? BULLSHIT!!

There would be no electricians without career colleges?? BULLSHIT!!

Most of these positions are ones where people can get on-the-job training. FACT.

  • I would OVERWHELMINGLY recommend that anyone who praises the virtues of these institutions watch the May 4, 2010 PBS "Frontline" video called COLLEGE, INC. (video.pbs.org/video/1485280975). I can tell you from the inside that everything in the video is 1000% true. No B.S.

  • Much of the problem lies in the fact that these institutions consider themselves "2nd (or 3rd or 18th or 36th) chance" schools, as most who attend wouldn't succeed in a traditional college or university. There is virtually no qualification process for admission - all you need is a pulse and a financial aid package, and the "admissions counselors" (SALESPEOPLE) always help you with the latter. Some schools make you take a rudimentary skills test to get in, but it's hardly mentally demanding.
