* Sephiroth's attack Hell's Gate is an aerial downward stab, and is based on the attack he used to kill Aerith Gainsborough.
* The disease Sephiroth mentions in Shade Impulse references the worldwide pandemic he caused in Advent Children, Geostigma, which Cloud was also infected with.
* According to Sephiroth himself, he killed himself in the previous war against Cosmos in order to ascertain the true nature of life and free his spirit from flesh to become more powerful. This is a reference to the Nibelheim Incident, where Sephiroth was "killed" and traveled the Lifestream, emerging years later as a more powerful being.
* Sephiroth speaks a variation of five lines from his appearance in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The first is one of his victory quotes outside of Story Mode, "I will never be a memory," the same quote he used after the last battle in Advent Children, which ironically, his line after losing to Cloud in the said movie. The second is his line before facing Cloud in Shade Impulse, "Fall to your knees and beg for mercy" (lit. On your knees; I want you to beg for forgiveness), right as he is about to slice off the top floors of the Shinra Building. The third line is "Where did you get that strength?" (lit. "Oh, Where did you find this strength?"), which is one of the lines he says when defeated and also ironic, considering that while he says the very same words to mock Cloud in Advent Children, he says it in a weaker tone in this instance. The fourth line is "Good to see you, Cloud" which he said when he appeared before Cloud before their fight. The last line is "If it's despair you want, then I shall provide" (lit. "I've thought of wonderful present for you. Shall I give you despair?"). He says the line to Cloud after he knocks him to the ground, right before Cloud gets back up and they fight. He also uses the line during his EX Burst.
* Sephiroth's version of Super Nova appears to be primarily based on the more famous North American, PAL and International version of the attack, which begins with the equations seen here, then features a comet impacting into the sun and destroying the solar system. The less famous original Japanese version merely involved a distant explosion with Jupiter and its moons in the foreground.
* The Black Materia attack is a reference to Sephiroth's grand scheme in Final Fantasy VII. The Materia itself appears in Sephiroth's hand during casting and calls forth Meteor.
* Sephiroth was featured in the first trailer, emerging from the fissure of magma that would later be revealed to be Chaos. Here, he prepares to face off against the Warrior of Light, standing in front of the magma before a close-up of his face is seen, reminiscent of his infamous scene from the Nibelheim Incident. Three notes, reminiscent of the way his name is said during One Winged Angel, can also be heard.
* When facing himself in a battle, Sephiroth says "One original is enough", referencing back to the presence of Sephiroth Clones in the original game.
* Stop acting as if you were sad., one of Sephiroth's victory quotes, references his line to Cloud after murdering Aerith.
* In the cutscene of Cloud's battle with Sephiroth in Destiny Odyssey VII, several scenes allude to other titles in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The scene where Cloud crosses the Buster Sword over the Masamune is identical to part of Sephiroth's battle with Zack in Crisis Core. After being knocked back, Sephiroth rights himself and knocks Cloud through the air, a reference to their battle in Advent Children. Finally, as the two face off at the end of the scene, the camera angles and poses are identical to their scripted battle at the end of Final Fantasy VII.
* One of Sephiroth's weapons, Masamune Blade, is the item that can acquired from the Golden Saucer on Final Fantasy VII but has no use whatsoever.
* Several references to Sephiorth's appearances in the Kingdom Hearts series are present: the attacks "Shadow Flare and "Oblivion", are both based on attacks Sephiroth uses in the Kingdom Hearts series. Sephiroth's quote upon entering EX Mode, "the time has come", is taken from when he uses Meteo in Kingdom Hearts II. During EX Mode, Sephiroth takes on a glowing purple aura as in the final stages of the battles with him in both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. As well, Sephiroth's fight entrance of descending to the ground with black feathers falling around him is similar to his entrance during his fight with Cloud in Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix.
* While performing his HP Attack, Hell's Gate, he says the line, "To the Promised Land", reminiscing his objective in Final Fantasy VII.
Trivia
* Interestingly, Sephiroth is the only Warrior of Chaos who summons his weapon, and does so in a flash of light like the Warriors of Cosmos. The other Warriors of Chaos are never shown summoning their weapons, and typically just carry them around with them.
