An NDB (Non Directional Beacon) on 530kHz.
An NDB is a form of radio navigation, used by aircraft to ethier plot there location on a chart (map), or to fly directly to an airport, or to define airways. NDB's have a great advantage over VOR's (VHF omnidirectional range) in that their signal folows the curvature of the earth, giving them very long range at low altitude. NDB's used to be used as navigation on ships, as well, but sadly, all the marine beacons were decommisioned back in 2000. To use an NDB for navigation, you must use ethier an ADF or RDF radio to figure out where the beacon is. GPS has somewhat phased out NDB's, but they are still a popular form of air navigation in some places.

  • what model ,? what year radio? cool radio

  • @silverbird58 It's a Memorex that's only a few years old, I got it as a gift a few years ago.

  • I made one video that I was receiving beacon EMR in Augusta, GA that was clear on 385 kHz that one is an FAA beacon for Daniel Field Airport. Sorry I did not know about this one on 529 kHz, I have to try to DX it at home, I was in GA 2 weekends ago during July 2 to 5. Thanks for the info.

  • @gccengineering1996 Cool, and FYI, I don't know where you will be when you try to tune in to it, but I could only hear it in the winter at dusk or night time. Your radio probably works a lot better for this than mine does, though! ;-)

  • Oh, this is hilarious. I've never picked up any NDB with a radio on the ground, but it sure is funny. We only have lower freq. NDBs in SoCal. I'll have to head up north again soon.

  • This is acctually in Northern Georgia, it's the only one I can hear, and only at night in the winter. (It's not an FAA beacon, but a 50 watt someone put up for their own airfield.) Pretty cool, though, 50 watts gives you 70 miles nav. range in the daytime, and 140 mile at night, with the low-effieincy antenna!

  • Used to copy "INE" 521 kHz, Missoula, MT and "PKV" 515 kHz, Port Lavaca, TX in Phoenix, AZ with a Selectatenna and plain AM clock radio around 1986. Too much splatter from AM BCB now, so will try DXpedition this winter away from city noise. 73 es GUD MW DX....

  • It's a Memorex, made to look like a 40's-50's radio.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Listening to LYQ now in NY. What kind radio is that? Sure works well, and resembles the front end of a big ol' 50's or 60's car!

  • Thanks!
