San Francisco's Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park has been holding drum circles every Sunday for more than 30 years. It always starts out small and as the afternoon progresses, more and more people of all ages, races and walks of life come down with their instruments and join in.
Some folks dance, others hula hoop, fire is spun, ultimate frisbee is played, hacky-sacks are kicked and everyone is in a good mood.
Hippie Hill is located next to the Haight/Ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco. This are is perhaps best known for its influence on the hippie movement and the Summer of Love in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today it has become far more popularized and is now a place for tourists to come snap a few photos, buy some overpriced trinkets, stare at the remaining hippies, catch a performance by a street-musician and head onwards. Still, it remains an interesting mix of old and new, as many of the street's residents have been there for decades and are more than willing to let you know how much better "The Haight" was back in the day.
