This narrated video documents the history of Shangri-La from her launching through 1968.
Includes scenes at Portsmouth, Virginia, and Shangri-La's participation in World War II. Also includes scenes of Shangri-La at the nuclear bomb tests and her role in the Sparrow Missile Program.

Includes excellent scenes documenting Shangri-La's collision with the destroyer Newman K. Perry, as well as operations with the fleets in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.

  • My Grandpa served on the Shangri-La up until 62 I believe. Larry Richey, an electrician. I'll have to show him some of these videos.

  • I served on the Shangri-La from 63 to 65 and was the ship's pharmacist.

  • My dad served aboard this ship in the 60s. I'll have to stear him towards this video. The poor old ship sat rusting in Philadelphia for years after retirment and finally they sold her to the Chinese scrappers to make razor blades or something.
