http://bit.ly/r4vlMT - Dhruv Baker visited an apple farmer in Kent to find out how they grow traditional English varieties for Waitrose.
Nothing says September quite like a juicy English apple. What could be a more quintessentially British fruit than a delicious crisp apple fresh from the orchard? Dhruv has come to meet apple farmer Paul Mansfield here in Kent, where the harvest is just getting under way, to find out as much as I possibly can about what goes into growing them.
The farmer, Paul Mansfield says 'This farm, Nicholl Farm, I bought in '94. I've been farming in fruit since 1988. This farm when we took it over was all old trees, wrong varieties. We've taken everything out basically it's all brand new. It's all been replanted with the right varieties, young trees.'
Waitrose sells over 30 varieties of English apples -- some of which are exclusive to Waitrose. British apples are a real classic. Enjoy them as they are or be a bit more creative with them. Saute them with some butter and some sugar as an accompaniment to pork, or in a traditional crumble. But however you eat them, they are absolutely delicious.
