There were some pretty kitschy excesses in the 1970s. Remember the weird AMC Pacer? Or the bug-eyed Matador? Or the humongous, garish, overstyled Cadillac Eldorado pimpmobile? Not to mention the horrendous clothing fashions.
Is there even such a thing as "American design" any more? Everything is designed and produced by multinational corporations. Take cars, for example -- it seems that every car on the road these days looks Japanese!
The problem is that much of American design is that it's become only as good as -- and how many millions of copies -- one can sell it for. Contemporary design no longer leads. It follows.
