After the invention of the revolutionary SKYACTIV®-G and SKYACTIV-D® engines, we needed the ultimate transmission to get all that precious energy to the wheels. How do you build that? Study every modern transmission made, take the best features of each and fire up the blender. Then, top it all off by adding a brain, A.K.A. an advanced control module. The result is the SKYACTIV®-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. It shifts smoothly for steady acceleration and quickly for the connected feel of a manual transmission, while the brain delivers precision responsiveness and reliability.

The only reason 6 speeds are needed is because the engine is too dinky to produce much low end torque. The powerband probably does not start much below 3000 rpm.
An engine with a wide powerband does not require more than 4 speeds with an automatic, 4th of course being an overdrive ratio.
In the days of REAL engines--read V-8s--the powerband on stock camshaft equipped engines started about 1800 rpm, and pulled to the high 4000s-5500rpm range.
Diesels start as low as 800-900 rpm, up to 2800 rpm.

The ratios are awful, second gear and fifth gear are too tall, third gear and sixth gear are too short.
