Quick history: Teacher unions negotiate with the school board. Without them, every teacher would negotiate on his own, and the individual is at a considerable disadvantage when all alone.
You might as well ask, Why? to any union.
Further, the teachers' union achieved stated-wide "tenure" (or holding of the job after approval of an apprenticeship).

Without tenure, there would be nothing to prevent a school board from getting rid of experienced teachers - who cost more money as in any occupation.
A school board would save tons (at the prompting of some taxpayers) by getting rid of ALL experienced teachers and hiring rookies across the board.
Experienced teachers are good for kids. Unions brought protection for experienced teachers.
That being said, there are lots of things you can criticize teacher unions for.
