  • saw him do this song in amsterdam last night...BRILLIANT, just the man with his voice and his guitar (and a pair of ripped jeans...)

  • Damn, I saw him in Groningen last Saturday and he did not do this song for us :(

  • JOhn Hiatt is one of the great songwriters of all time. His voice, melodies and feel throughout his career has set him apart. How may artists have remade his songs? He's the musicians musician.

  • AMEN

  • Good grief people! don't get so wound up about the "meaning"... One of the things I like about it is the ambiguity (a common John Hiatt theme) - Is the river real or a metaphor? Did she die in childbirth, get swept away by the river, kill herself, or run off with the postman? It's deliberately not made clear; you have to figure it out for yourself and take your own "meaning" from it...

In any case, it's one of my favourite songs of all time, to listen to and to play...

  • @charissasclips Hallo Charissa, please pay no attention to Anniemarcus. This song could be interpreted however you wish, that's part of what makes music so great. The first lines "my baby's gone and I don't know why, she lit out THIS MORNING". How could Anniemarcus say the suicide was 'a few WEEKS later'. John could even be referencing the Blues musician Muddy Waters, who knows. Anyway you cheapened nothing. The video is wonderful and I hope your vacation was terrific.

  • wow - love this guy.

  • @charissasclips I like it. I love the light in the video.

  • @Anniemarcus no it doesn't cheapen it!!!!!! This is an awesome video of beautiful scenery!!!!! I'm quite sure John would appreciate the scenery. Who are you to say what cheapens this song? Really you are an idiot.

  • @Anniemarcus

The daughter was actually about a year old - and this was all back in 1985. Tragic story still, but ... it's just a song, you know?

  • A TRUE STORY UNFORTUNATELY FOR NOT JUST MYSELF.
