She is facinating as singer and as actress, just great.

No offense to the Gwyneth Jones fans. I've always been a multi soprano lover but I'm not drawn to Gwyneth. Her Brunhilde is supposed to be great but I don't "get it". Her Tosca is not particularly impressive and it's actually boring. Her voice is clearly not cut out to sing this and that's a shame because non-Italian sopranos can if they try make good Toscas - Galina Vishnevskaya, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Leonie Rysanek, etc..but not Gwyneth. She's absolutely boring here!

I suspect the problems you have in understanding Gwyneth Jones's success as a singer are to do with the fact that you may not have seen her live nor at her best. She is a singer of incredible intensity and emotional freedom. That, and the extraordinary size and colour of her voice, account for the deep affection in which she is held by so many people that heard her. Her performances in the Ring at Bayreuth alone account for her status as one of the "greats".

I can never undertand how Dame Gwyneth could become higly dramatic soprano specialist! For me her voice is unsetady, dull a full of unbearable wobbling. Especially her lower register is so weak, there is no drama all round her....Sorry

Wixell & Dame Gwyneth are confirmed, legitimate opera stars. But, when it comes to acting, well... I smell bacon! Wixell couldn't have been more unbelievable & the Dame overacts in EVERYTHING! Have you seen her Riddle Scene from Turandot on here? OUCH! That is some serious ham!!!

I am sorry, but if you have seen Tito Gobbi in the part of Scarpia, you will consider Wixell just a possible choice.

It didn't happen anything him, still lives. Here he was 60 years old and retired throughout the 90'

I am so curious what happened to Ingwar Wixell, this is the latest recording I have heard of him. what happened to him?
I agree, the voice spreads too much here. But listen to quiet, high pieces, where she has to control it perfectly, like Patria mia (Aida) or D'amor (Trovatore) - the coloratura is gorgeous and so is the pianissimo throughout the range... Such resonance, such natural beauty.

Gwyneth Jones had an extraordinary voice of great size and power, a very rare instrument, and a thrill to hear. This would not have been her best role of course, but the wobble
became a problem later in the career. She earned her stature from many great performances, including the Ring in Bayreuth. I loved hearing her Turandot even at age 60....for the super-natural power of the high notes if nothing else.
