Toshiba recently announced the Portege R500 12.1" widescreen notebook that includes the new Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 (Merom) platform, and is the first ultraportable laptop to incorporate an optical drive into a system that is less than one inch thick and weighs less than 2.5 pounds. The following is a quick first take on the Toshiba R500.

  • @Gerrrry Lolz Yes Your right Cd drives are a waste of space on laptops.

But I like to watch movies on my laptop . Even if you rip a DVD movie you still need a Drive to do it.

  • So sick of reviewers saying that having an optical drive on a portable is a good thing!!! What a huge friggin waste of space, weight, battery and money when there are so many better options!!! Anything that comes on a CD, such as drivers, music, Operating Systems etc, I can just download or get on a USB! Don't waste all that space, weight and power on such a relic technology which could be put to far greater uses.

  • That's impressive!

  • @Meyanoos I will trade in my Lenovo X201 tablet with I7 for a good toshiba laptop. My Lenovo still sells for 1700 bucks, I bought it for 2400 at the time. Its just not my cup of coffee :((( I fel in love with Toshi

  • @LifeISMagix Why don't you like the IBM Tablet? Or do you mean the Lenovo Thinkpad? Because personally I did get the Toshiba laptop, but it's processor is pretty weak, so i'm planning to get a Thinkpad for myself with either a core i3 or i5, that will hopefully last me more than 3 years.

  • I have worked on many toshiba's and they all seem very reliable except for the hard drives. IMO they make shitty hard drives.

  • I had the honor to own a Toshiba laptop that I stupidly, unlogically and now regretfully swapped for an IBM tablet laptop. Go for Toshiba, there is nothing better out there....

  • i dont like flexible screens...i'm always frightened to brake them.

  • nice video...thanks
