MADEIRA, Eira do Serrado - Complete FM Scan (2)

This is the second video from the series of videos dedicated to the FM and AM band on the Portuguese island of Madeira situated some 700 km. off the coast of Africa, 900 km. of the coast of Europe and between 400 and 600 km. away from the Canaries.

As far as the FM band is concerned, I can confidently say that this is probably THE best place I have ever been to, though I could also say this about AM reception (but let's leave something for later). The nearest land to the Madeira archipelago (Madeira + Porto Santo + Desertas Islands) is more than 400 kilometers away and still, at about 1000 metres above sea level, the FM band is full - mainly of signals from the Canaries, but also from Morocco, nearly 1000 kilometers away! There is no doubt that many of these signals result from tropo conditions, but the question is how often they actually do occur there and my answer would be - they are nearly permanent. Even nowadays you can see on the roofs of houses in Funchal (the capital of Madeira) antennas beaming towards the Canaries. This is to show that even TV-reception is quite constant - why would a regular TV-viewer bother installing an aerial if reception was not constant?

The exact location of this scan is at 32°42'37.18"N ; 16°57'55.54"W, at about 1100 metres above sea level.

The weather conditions, as can be seen, were very good with a temperature of about 17-18°C (25-26°C at sea level). Visibility was excellent.

93.9 is very possibly Nouâdhibou, Mauritania 6kw. Programme content is very unlikely for 2M Morocco - in fact your 93.1 is 2M from Casablanca.

nearly a miracle...92.3 / 98.1 is a 1.5 kW transmitter located on the Canary Islands - signal O=5 !! on 500 k! also 97-1 Cope Tenerife - 500 k!

93-1 is Morocco - 900 k with only 15 kW! and what is 93-9 ? sounds like a local station from Morocco, very bad modulation

97-5 is Rabat, Médi 1 - 100 k with 5 k!

how are these distances possible?
