In the poor Irish town of Dromoleen, nine-year-old tearaway Paco (Jamie Kierans) often wonders about his father. His mum, Grace (Kerry Condon), says he was a Spanish sailor, but Paco can't remember anything about him. Determined to be ready for his dad's return, the boy learns Spanish from an old Linguaphone tape.
Late one night, a plane crashes dramatically in the woods on the outskirts of town. Its Colombian pilot, Francisco (Bruno Bichir), immediately attracts suspicion in the divided community. As the only Spanish speaker, Paco is called upon to translate. And he uses a bit of poetic license to help his new friend - by persuading everyone to build a runway to allow Francisco to fly home.
Inspired by extraordinary true events that unfolded outside Mallow in 1983, 'The Runway' is a remarkable tale of good old-fashioned human kindness.
