United Nations, New York, 4 March 2010 - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former US President and UN Special Envoy to Haiti President Bill Clinton joined today to launch MassiveGood- a new initiative to mobilize voluntary contributions for health in developing countries.
The new initiative permits leisure travelers in the United States to click on the MassiveGood banner on travel websites and through travel agents and donate $2.00 (USD) to fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis in the developing world.
In his speech, Ban praised the effort saying that though individual contributions may be small, the thinking is big. He also emphasized the role MassiveGood can play in the global effort to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
President Bill Clinton explained the need for MassiveGood by saying it could save millions and millions of lives. He outlined how a similar initiative launched by UNITAID, an international facility for the purchase of drugs against HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, helped hundreds of thousands of children and said that MassiveGood may be the beginning of a process of massive redistribution of responsibility across the globe in providing the developing world with healthcare.
Todays launch of MassiveGood in the United States will be followed by expansion to European countries.
