Stop the Gang Injunctions in Oakland | CJNY Justice Spotlight

The City Attorney has filed "Gang injunctions" against more than 50 people in Oakland. It makes non-criminal activity of targeted people illegal: hanging out with friends, being out past 10pm, or wearing certain clothing. It allows racial profiling and increased harassment based on what you look like and/or what tattoos you have. It takes away the right of those listed to due process before being charged with a crime , and doesn't notify 90% of the people targeted.

This attack on civil rights will mean more harassment of our youth, and the displacement of working class people of color through rapidly increasing real estate prices. During a time when Oakland schools are closing and vital services are being cut, the city is proposing spending $400,000 to further criminalize our youth. The money should be going into things that will make our neighborhoods safer, like good schools, health care, jobs, and affordable housing.

Let's use what we have in our neighborhood: strong families, organizations, and people! STOP THE INJUNCTIONS IN OAKLAND!!!

I have an idea: why don't blacks and latino youths simply cease any and all gang involvement, and stop committing crimes? Stop defacing their neighborhoods? And while they're at it, why not spend more time studying in the library? And all that energy putting in to be "gangsta"--- why not put the same energy into academic excellence? Gee, if they did all that, I wonder if gang injunctions and racial profiling would still occur. Hmmm...boy, that's a tough one.
