Nixon incorporated this idea into his Nixon doctrine.

We should not impose our will on the world, but we should have come to the aid of the Iranian protesters. Our failure to do so has only streangthened the resolve of America's enemies.

If I remember correctly, the Bay of Pigs invasion was something planned during the Eisenhower presidency and simply OK'd by JFK. But when it failed, he took full responsibility for it.

The president commands the military, not the military industrial complex. I was in the US Navy AWAC that watched that invasion. The CIA private army was in disregard of US law, and in violation of international law. President Kennedy ordered us not to participate. Our mission was to defend the US against any retaliation. The retaliation came later as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Had Lyndon Johnson been president, we would have had WWIII and the death of every oxygen dependent creature on Earth.

Why is it that America today refuses to acknowledge the fact that we cannot "impose our will on to the world"

Why is merely offering Iran's protesters moral support decried? We absolutely should offer moral support because it is a democratic value to use our words to support and inspire those who want freedom.

We are not the world's policemen. Why are we trying to deomcratize Iraq? We need to let them govern how they see fit or we will end up just recruiting more terrorists who hate America. We must not violate national soverignty of any nation. Why are we occupying other nations still? Do wars ever truly end?
