  • (cont.) I think 2000 chars is a fantastic goal. Certainly for the time frame and hour committment you're talking about, it's doable. If you end up being able to increase your study time per day, then I'd say shoot for 4000, so you're able to read newspapers.

I've been wondering if I'll ever reach a state in Japanese that I'm satisfied with just maintainence & wondering what maintainence requires. Right now there is SOOOO much I don't know, I don't feel like I'll ever get there. Thoughts?

  • @ksacha77 Thanks for the support. I think you know more than you give yourself credit. And you mos def know more than probably 90% of the people in this country and you have to celebrate that. Of course I always speak about learning what type of learner you are and that is what has helped me so much within the last year. I think once you figure that out fully then it all becomes easy. But I would like to ask how much time do you actually spend with your own studies away from the kids?

  • @ksacha77 (continued) But also I think you really have to ask yourself do you really love the language that you are studying. I changed my schedules around because I realized that although I have interest in many languages I love only a few so I'm only focusing on those. If you love japanese I say be patient. If not then I would think you would continue to teach your kids japanese and pick up the language that you truly love.

  • @leaukie I definitely totally love with Japanese. I'm just wondering if it's like math, where the more you learn, the more you realize that there is to learn. : ) It is work, but it is joy. If I am impatient, it's only because there are so many beautiful languages out there that I want to learn as well!

  • @ksacha77 you know what I totally understand. That's why I had to get my schedule together because I was distracting myself with wanting to do so many languages. I've decided the next 2 years will be Spanish, Italian and Mandarin only. I want to get to the point in all 3 where studying is not needed. I can just talk with natives and maybe watch tv or listen to music to keep it fresh but I want my languages to be a part of my being like english is or at least as close as I can get.

  • You have a very nice schedule out there!

    がんばってね! (Do your best!^^)

  • @RachidLanguage Thank you! Ganbarimasu!

  • @ksacha77 You will get there! Don't worry!^^

  • (continued) I'm glad to hear you're learning characters from the start. I wish we'd done traditional in school (I took 2 quarters of Mandarin in college). So much easier to start with traditional, then figure out the system for simplifying. If you start the other way, it's really like learning every word twice. I use Skritter for learning characters in Japanese. They have it for Chinese too. Have you checked it out? I'm done with trying to learn characters from books and flashcards...

  • Thank you so much for the excellent video! I was actually taking notes the entire time!! I have too many comments to leave here, so I'll just say a bit & will do a video response with my current Japanese schedule. It's enlightening to watch an experienced language learner from the beginning of a new language journey, so I will be looking forward to more videos. You obviously know yourself well & it looks like you are very realistic about the goals, patience & hard work required...
